How to become a good swimmer?
« on: May 03, 2010, 04:21:53 AM »
I'm in the 10th grade, I will be going to high school next year and I was thinking about joining the swim team. I think I'm a fairly good swimmer but I'm not sure. Over the summer I'm planning on joining a swim team for practice and preparation. I also want to work out and have a healthy diet. Are they any tips on how to become a good swimmer, good enough to be accepted on the team?
Oh and by the way I am not fat, I have muscular arms and pretty much good every where else.

You could take good, intensive training. Talk to the coach and work this out.

Well I recon you to follow the bellow tips, then you may will be able to achieve your goal.

1. Work with a coach whenever possible.

2. Pay attention to your breathing. Don't breathe too much. Breathing too much will make you slower. When racing, freestylers should be taking no more than 7 breaths every two lengths for short distances like the 50 and the 100, and for longer distances they should be breathing every 3 to 5 strokes. Breaststrokers should breathe every stroke, and flyers should breathe every 2 to 3 strokes. Flyers and freestylers should never breathe inside the flags.

3. Reach as far forward as you can during your stroke. If it helps, pretend that you're four, and you can't reach the cookie jar, and you really want a cookie.

4. Kick hard; pretend your legs really tickle, and you just want to get rid of the ticklish feeling.

5. Remember that when racing, the wall is your only friend, and that during a race, your sole objective in life is to give your friend a high five (or a high ten, for flyers and breaststrokers). Nothing else matters.

6. You can also pretend that a shark is out to get you and you need to get out as soon as you can, this will make you swim a lot faster.

7. Make sure you dive out not in when you are in a competition you will go a lot faster.

8. Practice as much as you can but not for too long.

Well to be honest I started swimming last year and didn't know how to swim basically. Always listen to your coach. If he/she is giving you a set then do it whether it is hard or not. So just kill yourself during practice and even though you might not like it, you are paid off with good times. Good luck.

Take your brain into the water with you,  don't leave it on deck. Think about what you are doing. And watch other  swimmers, assess, be critical. Read, watch videos, attend symposiums, lectures  etc. And talk to other swimmers, share ideas and try new things.

The only way to become a better swimmer is to practice.  As to how to do   that, the best and simplest  is to join your high school swim team and   go to all of your practices.  You will be coached, and you will   improve.

To become a good swimmer you must take swimming classes very often and listen to the coach well and mostly keep practicing.

Everything in a nutshell, if you are really serious about swimming, take a professional help through enrolling in an institute or with a private coach. Be consistent and steadfast to the training.

I would agree with pretty much everything thats written above, another thing that will help is having some one who is just a little faster and better than you are and CHASE them in training!

Just stick to a low sugar, high protein diet. Your muscles  will be working hard during swimming so the protein will be necessary. Try some  light weight training, and make sure you are not swimming in warm water. Also,  do the breathing techniques for practice out of the pool. You will need full  control of that.

You’re trying out for the swim team?! Ha I love yap. My  advice for you is to basically kill yourself during practice. . By the end of a  set your lungs should burn, and you shouldn't be able to feel your body.  Definitely listen to your coach. There are also some good YouTube videos that  teach you how to do the strokes. Just type in the stroke you want to learn into  the YouTube search engine and a bunch of videos should come up.

Swim in your local lake or whatever you have close to your house and go classes to become an expert.
